1st I am far from a professional painter. The tailgate on my 35 year old truck was not in good shape, due to a poorly done repair pre 1992 by original owner. I figured anything I could do would be better. I used all spray can products from Automotive touch up, primer, matched paint, and clear coat. Originally using the tools from my garage, I started with wood sander, quickly purchasing a low budget grinder to take it down to metal. I then built a low budget paint booth in my garage with plastic sheets. The tail gate was primed followed by a light hand sanding. I then painted it with 7 layers of paint followed by 5 coats of clear coat. It was looking good. Now don’t do this. After a day 1/2 of drying time on the last clear coat, I flipped it over on my saw horses with pad to protect the new paint job on the other side! Proceeded to sand prime and paint the other side with less effort because it the work side of the tail gate It looked good. But when I went back to the front. The padding left marks in the clear coat. I tried hand sanding only the area’s affected but failed. I purchased an orbital sander polisher. Went down to (6000 or 4000 don’t recall) grit and it was glass smooth before I redid the clear coat. Hear I learned another lesson the prep all the way back to the stripping to metal matters if you are wanting a great paint job. I was never expecting to do a great paint job but when I polished down with such fine grit I could see the possibilities even for a backyard painter such as my self. At the time in the process I could see the imperfections of sanding marks made in the metal. It was time to redo the clear coat, here is the only time I had an issue with the spray can. My last coat it began spitting and left “pimples” in the final result. This is why I give a rating of 4 not 5 Note, the spitting from the can could have been the result of something I did wrong!! I know I could sand these out and use a new can! By this time, I had to end my project to get my garage back and the tailgate back in my truck. I had achieved my goal of making my tailgate look much better then it did!!! Lesson learned. Get an orbital sander polisher use it to remove the paint or if you want to use chemical do that to start with a good surface. Use the orbital sander to sand when recommended and work down to a very fine grit. Stay away from low grit sand paper unless you really need it. I will be using the product for other touch ups on my truck next summer!
